New York gets new cycle hire scheme in time for Fashion Week - and it's more glam than you'd ever imagine Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/fema

Pedalling through the streets of New York on a designer bicycle may be the last word in urban chic.

But with prices as high as $17,000, pedal power with designer acumen - from the likes of Gucci and Hermes - is strictly the realm of the lucky few.

Now, the humble two-wheeler is having an altogether more accessible make-over, with designer bikes available to borrow during New York Fashion Week.

A host of designers, including Diane von Furstenberg, Isaac Mizrahi, Elie Tahari, Nanette Lepore and Rebecca Taylor will be giving rental bicycles a new look to coincide with the international fashion showcase.

The bikes are made by vintage-inspired specialists, Bowery Lane bicycles, who are collaborating with New York's Fashion Center BID for the scheme.

The designers have been sent the brand new bikes and have a month to come up with a decorating job. The finished products will eventually be available to borrow from various points in the Garment District.

Users will need to leave credit card details before using the steeds and will then be able to drop the bikes off at select locations.

The idea follows in the footsteps of past collaborations that have seen fashion houses producing limited edition bikes for sale.

We've seen the Fendi steed, complete with fur saddlebags, and we've cooed over the slick, black lines of Chanel's version. Gucci, Hermes, Cynthia Rowley and Eli Tahari have got in on the act, too.
