Somerset CityLoft in downtown Detroit opens with New York-style fashion show

On Wednesday night, Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit - between Grand River Avenue and Clifford Street - resembled a New York-style runway more than the Motor City.

The Somerset Collection in Troy held a celebration for the opening of itsSomerset CityLoft – a pop-up mall with 41 stores in downtown Detroit.

The celebration included a fashion show, along with the debut of Somerset CityLoft. Hundreds of people, including Detroit Mayor Dave Bing attended the event.

Saks Fifth Ave., Coach, Neiman Marcus, Lego and the Sweet Factory are just some of the businesses participating in the marketplace of mini stores, located in a 4,000-square-foot space at 1441 Woodward Ave.

The idea for the shop - open the last Thursday, Friday and Saturday of every month through at least September - came from the success Somerset had with its Detroit Shoppe.

The CityLoft project represents a $500,000 investment by Somerset and its sponsors: Quicken Loans, Cadillac and Bank of America. Quicken -- which last year moved its headquarters from Farmington Hills to downtown Detroit -- is paying the rent for CityLoft.

An undetermined portion of the proceeds from Somerset CityLoft will benefit ID 1441, a new charity the mall has created. ID 1441 (ID stands for Improve Detroit and 1441 is the CityLoft address) will donate money to Detroit-based charities.
