Redefining Muslimwear.

Day 3 of Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW) kicks off with 2 Muslimwear segments presented by one of Indonesia’s most prominent fashion organizations—the APPMI (Association of Indonesian Fashion Designers & Entrepreneurs).
Recognized as the world’s most populous Muslim country, Indonesia’s image is often associated with this demographic, which would consequently raise many speculative assumptions. Unbeknownst to many, the Indonesian Muslim population is actually highly moderate and tolerant. This became immediately apparent following the APPMI Muslimwear shows. Lush, vibrant colors dominated the runway—combined with the latest fashion trends, nonetheless. It should also be noted that Indonesian Muslimwear is a multibillion dollar industry that exports overseas to other Muslim countries such as Malaysia and the UAE. Moreover, many of the Indonesian Muslimwear designers are often regarded by their industry peers as trendsetters due to their out-of-the-box take on what is known by many as a conservative and oppressive way of dressing.
Dian Pelangi who is one of the most popular Muslimwear designers in Indonesia, presented a quirky collection that used layering as an effective mix-and-match styling solution. Topped with dramatic headpieces that incorporated various textures such as fur, pom-poms and tassels, the overall collection redefined conventional perceptions of Muslimwear in one sweeping gesture. 2Pose by Monika Jufri did the same by utilizing draped jersey in modern, monochromatic colors to produce a collection that is urban and versatile. Another notable collection came from Hannie Hananto’s Hijab Rock, which infused edgy rock and roll elements into her all-black collection.

Following the riotous response to Jakarta Fashion Week’s opening event, Day 2 promises an equally exciting array of fashion shows happening at the Fashion Tent and Promenade.

Menswear designer Billy Wong starts the day with “Tribute Paradigm,” which features batik from Madura, particularly Tanjung Bumi. He balances this traditional textile with contemporary fabrics such as denim and leather to present a collection that appeals to the urban market.

Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) alumnus Paula Meliana debuts her most recent collection, Paula Meliana for Eva Bun. The Burlesque-themed first segment is dominated by corsets in raw and chinese silk, combined with lace. The second segment sends bridal gowns down the runway.

Next is Lee Cooper’s Fall/Winter 2011 show, which is inspired by the London hipster scene in the 80s. The rock and roll spirit is channeled through printed t-shirts and skinny biker pants among others.

For those interested in young, Ready-to-Wear collection, don’t miss Bangkok designers Thawit Tangtieng at G.L.A.M and Sirus Tantiyapong at Yod Yoko.

Batik 118 by Dee Ong is known for its handmade batik silk gowns accented with lush details such as embroidery and beading. This year, the collection focuses on motifs from Tampis Lampung and Solo.

Another batik presentation not be missed is Ki Harry Ramadhan’s Ki Artik label. The collection merges ethnic and contemporary elements to produce modern creations without diluting its traditional value.

Grazia magazine presents Grazia Glitz&Glam, a parade of select celebrity fashion labels. This year the show highlights Ussy Sulistyowati and Andhinka Pratama’s shoe label, Dimas Beck’s menswear, and Claudia Hidayat’s accessories,  Indah Kalalo and Fabiola’s clothing label Flirt as well as Rossa’s glamorous fashion line.

10 of IPMI (Indonesian Fashion Designer Council) designers including Adesagi Kirana, Ghea Panggabean, Barli Asmara, Era Soekamto, Tri Handoko have each prepared a special color-themed collection dedicated to their fellow fashion designer and popular comedian Robby Tumewu.
