Expedition Details.....

Washington, D.C. is home to evocative memorials, neoclassic architecture, and eclectic neighborhoods. Photograph scenes of Eastern Market coming to life in the morning’s first light, as well as the stately architecture of Dupont Circle or the hip, ethnically diverse Adams Morgan neighborhood. Spend a morning on the National Mall, shooting your assignment amid the Washington Monument, the White House, and the city’s memorials that commemorate American history. Take a tour of National Geographic’s headquarters, where all of our classroom sessions are held, and enjoy an opportunity to go behind the scenes and meet with magazine staff to learn how the photographic process works at the Society.
This workshop is led by a National Geographic photographer and a professional instructor and is designed for amateurs who are interested in improving their digital photography. All participants must bring a digital SLR camera, a laptop computer, and software for organizing and presenting images. The workshop is limited to 25 participants.
The following is our planned itinerary; however, our schedule is flexible to allow for spontaneous photographic opportunities.

From its lovely French-influenced architecture to the jazz bands that fill the streets with swirling rhythms, New Orleans’ lively blend of cultures makes it a fantastic photography destination. Take to the streets of the French Quarter with your camera at the ready, photographing wrought-iron balconies tangled with flowers, the painters and mimes of Jackson Square, and timeless streetcars. Catch the early morning atmosphere at the legendary Café Du Monde, or photograph merchants peddling their wares at the bustling French Market. Venture into a historic cemetery to photograph ornate tombs, and document the city’s legendary nightlife in a jazz club or along Bourbon Street.

Iconic bridges, elegant row houses, diverse neighborhoods, and dramatic, undulating streets make San Francisco a particularly photogenic city. On daily assignments, photograph merchants hawking their exotic goods in bustling Chinatown, take portraits of craftspeople at the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market, and go on a shoot in the ethnic neighborhood of North Beach. In Russian Hill, capture graceful Victorian homes that line the steep streets and views of winding Lombard Street and of Alcatraz.

Rome is endowed with an incomparable combination of color and light, monuments and sculptures that have defined the history of art, and a gusto for the good life that’s palpable. For a photographer, the effect is pure magic. Immerse yourself in Rome’s vibrant spirit, setting out on shoots from our base at the Hotel Donna Camilla Savelli, a delightful 17th-century convent in the Trastevere neighborhood. Delve into the food and flower markets at Campo de Fiori with your camera in hand; photograph intimate piazzas, the gardens of Villa Borghese, and the legendary ruins of Palatine Hill and the Colosseum.

With the soft angles of its adobe homes; its stunning mountain backdrop and radiant light; and its unique blend of Spanish, Native American, and Wild West flavors, Santa Fe is an ideal setting for photographers. Delve into the thriving artist district of Canyon Road, capture the spectacular landscape near Georgia O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch, and go on a photo shoot in a recreated Old West town.
